An Introduction to Different Types of Vinyl

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VINYL?

Are you overwhelmed by the many different types of vinyl? Which vinyl to use for etching glass, wood, shirts, or other surfaces? Then you should read this post! Find out what you need to know about the various vinyl types.

I love crafting with vinyl, but I completely understand that it can be overwhelming when you start in the beautiful world of vinyl crafts.

I hope I can help you select the best vinyl for your project. Let's start by briefly discussing the many types of vinyl.

So, Adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl are the two basic types of vinyl. Some several types and styles fall under each of those two more significant categories, which I shall discuss in more detail later.

Thin, flexible material with a pressure-sensitive adhesive is the adhesive vinyl (sticker vinyl). It can be cut into any shape and adhered to various smooth, hard surfaces. A substance with a heat-activated adhesive called Heat Transfer Vinyl (also known as Iron On Vinyl, T-Shirt Vinyl, or HTV) is made to adhere to fabric surfaces (or any surface that can stand the heat). Both vinyl types are offered in rolls and sheets, typically 12′′ wide.

Adhesive vinyl can have a variety of colors and finishes, but it will always have a paper backing that must be peeled off before it can be used. On the other hand, Heat Transfer Vinyl doesn't have a paper backing. Instead, the top of the vinyl is covered by a transparent plastic carrier sheet in HTV. You will cut on the vinyl's opposite side, where the adhesive is located (it is not gooey or sticky to the touch).

Now you know what the two basic categories of craft vinyl are, but there are many types within each category. Let's talk a little more about types of adhesive vinyl, and then we will move on to heat transfer.

There are several types of adhesive vinyl besides just glossy and matte! Many colors, designs, and types of enjoyable special vinyl are available. Here are just a few types you might want to try out (be sure to check the product description before you purchase to see if it has a removable or permanent adhesive).

Stencil Vinyl: It is vinyl that is made specifically to be used as a stencil. Its edges are supposed to seal to your project better than regular vinyl. When the edges seal better, there is less likeliness of paint seeping under the rim and more likeliness of crisp lines. Stencil Vinyl is one-time use, and it sticks to your project. Stencil Material is thicker, like a firm plastic sheet, and used repeatedly.

Etched Glass Vinyl- Self-Adhesive Etched Glass Vinyl Film, or Etch Vinyl, is a vinyl coated with a permanent adhesive. Etched glass vinyl is the same as any other permanent adhesive vinyl. The only difference is that it is semi-transparent and gives you that cool etched glass look. When affixed to glass or any other transparent substrate will create the same effect as if the surface had been etched or blasted.

Glitter Vinyl:Working with Glitter Vinyl is not as hard as you think. Though, it's a little bit different from the standard vinyl. This type of vinyl is a bit thicker and sturdier than other types of vinyl, making it a little trickier to cut. The glitter vinyl has a permanent adhesive, so it's great on glasses, water bottles, mugs, and even on wood.

Metallic Vinyl- metallic adhesive vinyl sheets are perfect for your crafting needs. It is easy to weed and durable and can be used to customize tumblers, window decals, car decals, signs, stencils, scrapbooking, or any other permanent application with a semi-smooth surface.

Patterned Vinyl- Patterned vinyl allows you to make your designs pop – and it is easy to work with! Take fun patterns - like serape, camo, floral, ombre, and so much more - and turn them into unique designs you can apply to almost any garment or object. Don't be intimidated to give patterned vinyl a try! Grab some of our patterned adhesive vinyl if you want to make stickers for indoor and outdoor use.

Chalkboard Vinyl- chalkboard types of vinyl are self-adhesive films that can turn flat, smooth surfaces into useable chalkboards or blackboards. Chalkboard adhesive vinyl works with chalk and chalk-ink markers and wipes clean with an eraser or a damp towel. It is recommended for indoor use only.

Glow in the Dark Vinyl- Glow in the Dark vinyl is a unique specialty vinyl that absorbs ambient light during daytime conditions and emits it afterward to create a great glow-in-the-dark effect. This vinyl collection includes Siser EasyPSV Glow, OraLUX 9300, and Oracal 3930. Siser EasyPSV Glow is a 4.2 mil glow-in-the-dark adhesive vinyl that collects light during regular daylight hours and discharges it afterward. OraLUX 9300 is a glow-in-the-dark vinyl specifically designed for emergency signage. At the same time, Oracal 3930 is a glow-in-the-dark printable vinyl intended for indoor and outdoor emergency exit & warning signage.

Transparent Vinyl- is a unique calendared adhesive vinyl designed for use as an overlay to add color to substrates, glass surfaces, or other types of vinyl. Transparent vinyl can be laminated to silver holographic films to create new color options, applied to window glass to create decorative spaces, or applied over lighting elements. It is also known as Oracal 8300. This UV-stabilised, transparently dyed, gloss special-purpose film boasts a performance of up to 5 years. It is perfect for high-quality illuminated signs and for decorating back-lit glass surfaces.

Printable Adhesive Vinyl- Printable adhesive vinyl can be used to easily make custom decals and stickers in whatever designs you like! These decals are durable, water and weather-resistant, and have a permanent adhesive. They can be adhered to any hard, smooth surface indoors or outdoors. I love printable vinyl because it is a super easy way to create beautiful multi-colored designs.

As you can see, the options are endless! After deciding whether you require a permanent or removable adhesive, choose the color or design with that adhesive. The type of adhesive you need for your project—a removable adhesive or something that can withstand sun, water, and a lot of handling—should be your top priority when picking an adhesive vinyl.

Let's discuss Heat Transfer Vinyl next.

Let's check out a few different types of HTV.

I suggest Siser EasyWeed for basic smooth HTV because it is simple to work with, has a vast color selection, and is washable and durable. Heat transfer or iron on vinyl is available in various colors and patterns, just like adhesive vinyl.

Flocked HTV- Flocked iron-on is a type of heat transfer vinyl with a fuzzy or furry texture. The texture is similar to felt or suede and is much thicker than regular heat transfer vinyl. This texture is raised, giving your design depth and dimension.

Glitter HTV- Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl has the same great qualities as regular heat transfer vinyl but with an intense glitter finish. Siser Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl provides MAXIMUM sparkle without shedding any glitter flakes. Any glitter fan will fall in love with this material! It is easy to cut, weed and apply.

Metallic HTV- HTV Metallic vinyl is here to help you easily create stunning, metal-look and embossed clothing. It is also highly durable and comes in various colors and styles. You can apply Metallic HTV using household iron or a heat press. It brings the sparkle and shines to any craft project!

Holographic HTV- Holographic Heat Transfer Vinyl creates a multi-dimensional effect and is available in many colors and finishes. While thicker than traditional heat transfer vinyl, it is unique in that it can be cut to resemble the look of rhinestones without the hassle of closely! Holographic heat transfer will add a whole new dimension to any material and will take your design to a new level.

Reflective HTV- We can use the Reflective Heat Transfer vinyl on almost any flat material, such as leather, textile fabrics, plexiglass, metal, plastic, crystal, wood products, copperplate paper, etc. No strict requirements for plate making, color registration, and complicated exposure procedures, and they will not cause damage to the materials. Reflective heat transfer vinyl, or reflective

Stretch HTV- Stretch Heat Transfer Vinyl is a thin, stretchy PU film on an adhesive polyester backing, perfect for heat transfer onto elastic garments like Elastane. Stretch HTV blends well with textiles, has magnificent stretch and rebound properties, and is soft to the touch. It also offers easy cutting, weeding, and applications.

Patterned HTV- Patterned vinyl is the perfect way to add a little personality to a favorite sports team logo, character silhouette, or icon. Patterned vinyl is ideal for making skins or decals for your tech.

Although all HTV is washable, following simple guidelines will help your finished item look good for longer. The look you desire should be your first consideration when picking an iron-on vinyl. All iron-on types of vinyl should work on any fabrics and materials that can withstand the heat of your iron or heat press. However, specific vinyl types will perform better with particular fabrics or patterns. For instance, shiny and holographic vinyl is frequently stiffer; as a result, it functions best with designs made up of smaller pieces rather than extensive vinyl stretches. Like how to stretch knit, ribbed, or athletic materials perform better with stretch vinyl.

That was a lot. After reading about the many vinyl types, you should have a great idea of the type of vinyl you'll need for your upcoming project.

So, Which Vinyl Should you Use?

The general rule is: Use adhesive vinyl if your surface is firm and smooth (i.e., walls, mugs, bottles, picture frames, mirrors, boxes, etc.). Heat transfer vinyl will function best if your surface is soft and can withstand heat (clothes, shoes, books, tote bags, etc.).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ADHESIVE VINYL AND PERMANENT VINYL?

Craft lovers who plan to try out vinyl printing should know the types of vinyl. First, there are two types of vinyl — heat transfer vinyl (for fabrics) and adhesive vinyl (for tumblers, mugs, etc). Adhesive vinyl is categorized into two — permanent and removable vinyl.

In this blog, we'll focus on the difference between permanent and removable vinyl. Why do you need to know this information before you hop into vinyl crafts? This ensures you're using the suitable vinyl and it sticks the way you want it. Read further and learn more.

Permanent vs. Removable Vinyl

You should be aware that vinyl is available in various designs and colors. Vinyl may be either removable or permanent. However, there are many differences regarding their uses and purpose.

To sum it all up, here are the differences and similarities between permanent and removable vinyl:

Waterproof YES YES
For printing on fabric NO NO

Essentially, these are the essential differences and similarities between removable and permanent vinyl. But you still need to know a ton more to produce stunning, excellent, and long-lasting products. Let's talk about it more.

What You Should Know About Permanent Adhesive Vinyl

If there's one thing you need to remember about permanent vinyl is that it sticks, thus the word permanent. If you plan permanent application on the wall, glass windows, or any merchandise, permanent vinyl is the way to go.

Here are some things you need to remember about permanent vinyl:

Fact #1: It lasts a long time and is permanent.

The paint on the walls may become harmed if permanent vinyl adheres to them and then tried to be removed. The same applies to permanent vinyl on wooden signage or glass windows. Therefore, if you use permanent vinyl for vinyl decals on your walls, be sure you don't intend to take them off in the future.

Use removable vinyl if you anticipate changing your mind or if the situation is a one-time occasion. Additionally, removable vinyl can be used indoors instead of permanent vinyl because it won't harm the paint job on the walls. However, if you want the vinyl decals to last long outside, you should use permanent vinyl. Permanent vinyl is suggested for outdoor use where it will be subjected to various weather conditions.

Can removable vinyl be used outside? Yes, but don't expect it to last for long. When exposed to different weather conditions outside, removable vinyl won't stick for a very long period. However, using removable vinyl outside is acceptable if it's just for a single event.

Fact #2: The sealing procedure and permanent vinyl

The majority of vinyl manufacturers advise against using a sealer on permanent vinyl. You can avoid using a sealer if you choose high-quality vinyl. You're confident that it will adhere even without a sealer. A sealer is not required when applying permanent vinyl as a wall decal, tumbler, or mug. However, applying epoxy to seal glitter vinyl on tumblers is advised. Why? Because glitter vinyl tends to smear off, use a sealer to keep glitter vinyl's shiny, shimmering appearance on your products.

Fact #3: Permanent Vinyl on Mugs and Tumblers

Creating personalized gifts using vinyl on mugs and tumblers will always be a great hit. But what kind of vinyl do you use on mugs or tumblers?

Permanent vinyl is advisable. Since mugs and tumblers need to be washed every after use, the vinyl must withstand frequent washing.

But what about the dishwasher? Can you place mugs with permanent vinyl on a dishwasher? The answer is no. Most types of vinyl, whether whether permanent or removable, are not dishwasher or microwave safe.

When exposed to a dishwasher's high temperature and water pressure, permanent vinyl may peel off. So make sure to only handwash mugs or tumblers with vinyl.

What You Need To Know About Vinyl with Removable Adhesive

Indoor projects? Interior signs? Provisional applications? Do you need stencils? Then you need removable vinyl. Removable vinyl will adhere to glass, paper, walls, and wood... Basically, any surface type. This vinyl will quickly and cleanly peel off, leaving no trace behind.

But the fallback? It's intended more for short-term use. Because of this, temporary vinyl is also known as temporary vinyl. It's the most significant benefit, right? You may change your design at any time without having to worry about leaving messes behind or affecting the wall paint,

Here are more facts you need to know about removable vinyl:

Fact #1: The Duration of Removable Indoor Vinyl

When used indoors, removable vinyl lasts one to three years. Of course, the environment will have a role in this. The removable vinyl may last less time, for instance, if the room's humidity is too high and the wall starts to become moist.

Removable vinyl won't last very long when used outside or printed on a mug. Most likely, removable vinyl will only last for 1-3 months. That's why it's essential to know the difference between permanent and removable vinyl. This is to ensure that it sticks longer and better.

Fact #2: Fabrics, washing, and the sealing process for indoor vinyl

Can removable vinyl be sealed? Yes. Use epoxy, spray sealant (polyurethane polyacrylic spray), or dishwasher-safe Mod Podge if you want the removable vinyl to stick to the surface well.

What projects call for the use of a sealer on removable vinyl? For projects like ceramics, glass surfaces, or wood signage.

How about removable washing vinyl? No, is the answer. First, never remove vinyl on mugs, tumblers, or glasses. Even though removable indoor vinyl is waterproof, it will start off after numerous washes.

What's the conclusion to all of this, then? Permanent vinyl and vinyl that is removable differ significantly in terms of both permanence and the strength of the adhesive they contain. Removable vinyl has weaker adhesive and permanent vinyl has stronger adhesive.

So the next time you have craft projects, you already know which kind of vinyl to use. It's always essential to use the correct type of vinyl for the style and purpose of the project you're aiming for.

WHICH VINYL IS BEST FOR CRICUT?

The popularity of Cricut machines, which let users design and precisely cut out designs for projects, has exploded recently. DIYers can adorn everything from T-shirts to cars with unique, intricate designs using a Cricut or similar craft-cutter machine with adhesive or heat transfer vinyl.

But with so many possibilities and a wide range of costs, buying craft-cutter vinyl online can feel a little intimidating. This article addresses the essential factors to consider when evaluating products and explains what to look for for the best vinyl for Cricut machines. Discover our hand-picked selections for some of the most fabulous vinyl for arts and crafts projects, and use our guide to learn how to make the best decisions.

Things to Take Into Account When Selecting the Best Vinyl for Cricut

Although it's easy to assume that all types of vinyl offer similar performance, several factors affect their functionality. By reading on, read on the key aspects to take into account when picking vinyl for a Cricut machine.

Type

The three primary types of vinyl used for crafting are permanent adhesive, removable adhesive, and heat transfer vinyl. All three types have their unique advantages and applications. Permanent adhesive vinyl, the most common type available, works like a sticker but with superior staying power. This type of vinyl is waterproof and can withstand plenty of use and washing. Removable vinyl has a similar application method to permanent adhesive vinyl but is designed to be taken off quickly if desired. Heat transfer vinyl, also known as iron-on vinyl, can be applied with either a heat press or a standard iron.

Intended Use

Users must think about their intended usage for the vinyl before selecting it for their Cricut machine. Mugs and automobile decals are just two examples of the many products that can be made with permanent adhesive vinyl. You may use it on both indoor and outdoor goods because it is waterproof and won't move. On the other hand, removable adhesive vinyl works better for scrapbooking, temporary decorations, and wall decals. The purpose of heat transfer vinyl is to decorate soft fabrics like apparel, purses, hats, and other accessories.
