PROPER HTV CARE INSTRUCTIONS: TIPS AND TRICKS ON HOW TO WASH AND DRY HEAT TRANSFER VINYL

We all want our customized HTV creations to last! Thankfully, this isn't some far-fetched dream but an achievable victory. Enjoy them for quite a while without worrying about premature cracking or peeling.

And just like any other hard-won prize, one must go the distance to make this happen—you need not just put effort into perfecting your heat transfer skills but also into mastering some post-pressing practices.

Though HTV promises remarkable durability, one still needs to be protected from the threat of improper care and misuse. One wrong move and your entire effort can go down the drain instantly. And to save you from this lurking danger, we'll help you learn some tips and tricks to ensure a lasting HTV design.

Our first stop? To answer one of the most frequently asked HTV questions:

Can you wash and dry heat transfer vinyl?

Heat transfer vinyl is a pretty durable material. And since it's purposely made to be applied on shirts and other wearables, part of its strength is to withstand considerable washing and tolerable exposure to sun heat.

So Yes! It's safe to say that Heat Transfer Vinyl is both water-resistant and heat-resistant.

But consider these features as something other than a free pass to do whatever you want with your HTV creation. Even with such reliable characteristics, you can't repeatedly parade it under the sun or carelessly wash it over and over without thinking it won't impact the vinyl's quality. So before you wash and heat-dry that customized shirt, take a moment to educate yourself on the dos and don'ts of washing and drying HTV.

How do you wash and dry clothes with HTV?

Performing a seamless pressing is just half the story. What will give you a guarantee of lasting vinyl also depends on how well you care for and handle your HTV projects. So here are proven methods to wash and dry clothes with HTV safely:

1. Wait for at least 24 hours before washing

Keep your excitement from getting in the way of a long-lasting vinyl decal. One of the most damaging HTV mistakes to commit happens right after a successful design transfer, and that is washing too soon.

As a general rule, laundering the garment right away is a big NO-NO! You need at least 24 hours of curing time before you're allowed to wash it. Crafters must strictly follow this step to ensure the adhesive has enough time to harden and cool. This one's necessary if you hope to have fully adhered vinyl on garment substrates.

2. Keep away from hot water setting; Only use cold or warm water for washing.

The next secret to securing durable vinyl application lies in the water's temperature. The water should either be cold or warm to be safe or at least 178°F and below. Anything above this number poses the risk of reactivating the vinyl's adhesive, thus weakening its hold on the fabric and could eventually result in peeling. Since HTV's adhesive is heat-activated, it's best to avoid selecting high temperatures.

3. Use detergents that are mildly formulated.

Nope! The magic behind HTV has Chemistry to thank for it. It's not fairy dust that makes the vinyl stick on the substrate but scientifically formulated chemicals. It is based on such reason that you must use only mild detergents for washing clothes with HTV.

So, how can we know if a detergent is mild? Usually, these detergents are made with added ingredients that are possibly corrosive to the vinyl's adhesive. Just steer away from those products promising instant whitening or effective stain removal.

4. Avoid using bleach and fabric softeners.

If we disapprove of strongly-formulated detergents, what more of using bleach and fabric softeners?

These products contain chemical additives that can dissolve or weaken the adhesive's bond to the fabric. However, if and only if the situation calls for the use of bleach, you must do it with extreme caution. Instead of mixing bleaching agents with the water, you're soaking the garment under, directly targeting the spot where there's a stain. But stop if the location is close enough to the vinyl to avoid unwanted consequences.

5. Turn the garment inside out.

Before that final toss into the washing machine, remember to turn the garment inside out. It's a vital move if you want to protect your precious HTV from rubbing against other garments, especially if these other clothes have garment detailings like zippers and buttons. The friction produced by this continuous rubbing can cause abrasion that can scratch or even peel your vinyl graphic off the shirt.

6. Don't Dry Clean

With quite a several details to consider when washing clothes with HTV, dry cleaning is a better alternative to avoid remembering all these dos and don'ts. But sorry to tell you, Dry Cleaning is also prohibited for HTV-adorned wearables.

The dry cleaning process involves the presence of hot temperatures and other strong chemicals that can affect the HTV's adhesive the same way strong detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners do.

7. Do not soak the garment before washing.

Here's another precautionary measure we can apply to assure vinyl won't peel off right away. Avoid soaking the garment for long hours before washing. Even with mild detergent, immersing it under water for a long time can negatively affect the vinyl's binding properties. For HTV's safety, soak it with water only when you begin washing.

8. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight when drying; dry on a low-heat setting.

The sun's heat is too hot these days, so you would never want such high temperatures for drying clothes with HTV. Instead, let it dry under low heat or within a shaded area if you want to be sure about it.

9. Avoid dryers, Do not Wring Dry; Hang Dry.

It's not just peeling that we're avoiding here; as much as possible, we don't want our vinyl wrinkled too. And sadly, the two most effective ways of extracting water off the garment cause this wrinkling. It's best to hang it dry to minimize the chance of wrinkled vinyl.

10. Never iron directly on vinyl.

As we all know, vinyl is still susceptible to high temperatures and can melt when directly exposed to heat. To apply iron on it, cover the HTV portion with parchment paper or another cloth. The heat passing through the covering is enough to smooth out any wrinkling and crease on the fabric.

When it comes to prolonging the life of your vinyl decoration, these methods and techniques listed above are the best and safest ways to guarantee a long-lasting creation.

But what if a portion of the vinyl graphic is already peeling off? That's what we focus on next, so check below to learn some tips to fix this problem.

How to Stop HTV from peeling off after washing?

A peeling HTV is the ultimate disaster we're trying to avoid here, so to prevent such an unfortunate case, your best defense is to follow the guide above faithfully. It's the only way to guarantee your HTV will stay bonded on your garment.

However, the time will come when your HTV's adhesive will unbind or loosen even after a few washes. When this happens, please do not get frustrated, for it's not the end of your vinyl-decorated shirt.

There's a way to stop a peeling HTV from fully detaching from its substrate? Before it finally peels off your shirt, you can save it by repressing it.

Here's what you need to do when pressing the HTV again:

1. Lay the garment flat. Make sure there are no obstructing surfaces that prevent even distribution of pressure and heat when you heat press.

2. Since the carrier sheet is already gone, do not forget to add a layer of protecting sheets because we don't want our fabric and vinyl to burn from extreme heat. Using a Teflon sheet is the safest choice, but parchment paper will also do.

3. If you're going to use a heat press, you reapply the recommended heat setting. If you choose a regular home iron, start with low heat instead of immediately adjusting the setting to high. Also, do not slide it over the HTV. Just press on one spot based on the required time, and that will do it.

4. Once done pressing, check if the vinyl is bonded again with the garment. If not, try another repress, this time with a higher temperature.

Repressing your HTV will not give you 100% assurance of solving the sticking issue, as there may be other factors causing this dilemma. Another reason the HTV starts to fall off could be a worn-out adhesive. In such a case, you may deliberately remove the remaining sticking vinyl and perhaps apply a new HTV graphic.

To do this, you can either tap the help of a regular home iron or apply vinyl-removing agents.

Using a home iron, apply minimal heat on the backside of the peeling vinyl. This is to reactivate the remaining adhesive. Once the heat weakens the adhesive, use a tweezer to remove the other adhered portion of the vinyl design. This technique is generally applicable to small chunks of vinyl designs.

Now for more extensive graphics, you can apply vinyl-removing agents. Turn the garment inside out and target the back area of the vinyl still stuck on the shirt. Once the adhesive is loosened, carefully remove the remaining HTV. If you plan to use the garment again, wash it first to remove any residue of the vinyl-removing agent.

We know how disappointing it is to have something you enjoy wearing or are proud of turn into waste. That's why we give time to educate our fellow crafters on preventing such things from happening. We hope this guide helps you and answers all the post-pressing questions crowding your mind. Now, no fear of faulty washing and drying can scare you.
